President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead the South African delegation to the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly Debate and High-Level Week in New York, USA, from next week.

President Ramaphosa is expected to address the General Assembly on the opening day next week on Tuesday.

The annual gathering of world leaders is the most key event on the UN calendar. It affords leaders an opportunity to discuss global challenges like sustainable development goals, climate change and world peace.

This year, the African Group is chairing the UN General Assembly, with Philemon Yang, former Prime Minister of Cameroon, as President of the 79th Session.

President Ramaphosa is set to focus on a number of issues, such as the maintenance of international peace and security, implementation of the 2030 agenda, the upcoming climate change talks in Baku, Azerbaijan and financing for development and pandemic preparedness.

He will also take part in the UN Secretary General’s Summit of the Future which is expected to adopt a Pact for the Future.

Ramaphosa will engage with business leaders as part of attracting foreign direct investment in the country.

The President will be accompanied by several cabinet ministers, including the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola.
