The Putco bus company says it will now pay year-end bonuses after chaotic protests at the depot in Pretoria linked to its initial decision to apply for an exemption allowing them not to pay bonuses this year.

Putco spokesperson Matlakala Motloung says workers went on an unprotected strike when they learned of the application not to pay bonuses.

She says Putco management will be meeting with legal representatives of workers within the next two weeks to find alternative solutions to the financial problems Putco is currently facing.

Police are monitoring the situation at the Tshwane Putco bus depot in Gauteng after bus drivers began a wildcat strike.

The protests at the depot caused severe traffic disruptions.
