The African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa is in KwaZulu-Natal to meet with party structures in the province to assess the election results.

This after the ANC lost its majority in the province, receiving just over 17 % of the vote. The ANC is now the third biggest party in the province after the Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).

The ANC’s KZN provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo says KwaZulu-Natal has always been a challenge for the ANC. Mtolo says the party is determined to win back the 21 municipalities it lost during the 2021 local government elections.

He says the meeting with the NWC will help shape the way forward.

“Once the NWC gets exactly what is happening on the ground then they will come up with a turnaround strategy working with the provincial executive committee and the regional executive committees so that we prepare for 2026. But I think we must accept that what we have undermined in these elections, while we knew that the Zuma factor is going to have a huge impact in KwaZulu-Natal, but we didn’t accept that it’s going to have so much impact as it has done.”
