President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed the arrest of four alleged extortionists in Milnerton in Cape Town. The wounded suspects that were apprehended are under police guard in hospital.

Four others were killed in the area on Thursday night during a shootout with police.

The eight were allegedly on their way to commit a mass shooting.

Ramaphosa was speaking at the signing of a cooperation agreement between all spheres of government to combat crime in Cape Town.

“What this means is that we are now taking the war against those who extort money. We are taking the war against the construction mafia. We are taking the war against gangsters. We are now going to take you on and make sure that you are brought to justice. The gangsters are tearing our communities apart and this is costing innocent lives. Businesses are being forced and they are now tired because they are being forced to pay extortion fees and are being held under siege from criminals who are destroying their businesses,” says the President.
