Energy expert Mohamed Madhi has commended Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa for his decision to aggressively implement renewable energy.

Ramokgopa made the pledge yesterday during his first media address after being re-appointed as the Minister of Electricity for the seventh administration.

Madhi acknowledged that while the process might take time, it will help reduce the current high electricity prices.

“One of the first things that can be done to bring that alive, to bring that into action is to increase the incentives that currently exist for renewable energy. And to also make the process with Eskom a lot easier,” Madhi says.

“A lot of clients are having problems setting up power plants, especially wheeling power plants because of the delays within Eskom. And I think those delays were not particularly paid attention to under [Minister Gwede] Mantashe’s time. But if we can fast track that we certainly will get a whole lot more renewable energy coming online,” Madhi adds.
