Rand Water in Gauteng has announced the implementation of Stage One water curtailments in an effort to slow the high level of water consumption.

In a statement, Rand Water says the hot summer months present a persisting challenge where usage increases.

They say a number of factors associated with usage have put a strain on the water system.

According to Rand Water, South Africa is ranked as one of the driest countries in the world. However, the country continues to be amongst the highest consumers of clean water despite the limited availability of the resource.

Rand Water warns that the situation may worsen if consumers do not change their behavioural patterns and reduce the demand for water.

Municipalities have been urged to immediately attend to the leaks and manage the night flows through reservoir management protocols.
