Researchers working on the meteorite which was found in Nqweba, formerly Kirkwood in the Eastern Cape, say they are searching for additional fragments.

The team of researchers is made up of academics from three universities, Rhodes, Nelson Mandela and Wits.

The meteorite, which has been named Nqweba, has been kept in a vault.

Professor Roger Gibson, from the Wits School of Geosciences, has urged the public to contact them if they found any fragments, as they are the only permitted team to collect them.

“We know there are people who are looking for meteorite fragments and we do not understand their motives. So, we are urging again the public to contact us. If they think they found something and we will try and assist in that.”

Gibson adds: “The collection of additional fragments is important to understand how the meteorite broke up in the atmosphere and where it ended up. What the size pieces are and where they ended up. It makes an important contribution to science.”
