Rwanda has started vaccinating people in high-risk areas against mpox. It becomes the first country in Africa to do so.

Rwanda’s campaign focuses on seven districts that border the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) which is the epicenter of the outbreak and accounts for more than 90 percent of the continent’s cases.

Rwanda has recorded cases of mpox which were initially reported in the DRC. Officials haven’t recorded many cases, but they have already started carrying out the vaccination exercise.

They’re working very closely with the African Centre for Disease Control to ensure they have got more vaccines to spread the vaccination drive across the country.

The DRC has also received about 260 000 doses of vaccines.
