Author and activist Marion Sparg says communities have to play a big role in ensuring that gender-based violence and femicide become a thing of the past.

Sparg has launched her book “Guilty and Proud” in Johannesburg as the country marked Women’s Day.

The launch held on August 9 was hosted by the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation. She said women need to come forward to report GBV.

“It requires a society-wide response. There is only so much that law enforcement can do. I have to continue encouraging women to report and we have to provide women with the support they require when they report. We have to make sure that they don’t go through victimisation. The laws have to be strengthened,” she said.
