SA joins ICRC initiative to galvanise political commitment

Six countries including South Africa, China, India, France, Brazil and Kazakhstan have joined the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to launch a new global initiative.

The aim is to galvanise political commitment in support of international humanitarian law.

Conflicts in Sudan, Gaza, Ukraine and Syria among others regularly see widespread violations of international humanitarian law.

International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola says, “We believe that we need to shine the spotlight on that and to work with the International Red Cross to bring experts who will implement and make sure that also international humanitarian law, as the world is evolving, it also evolves with the changing dynamics, because you can see that with the goalposts shifting in terms of the conflicts where there is no respect for humanitarian law, also international law must evolve to respond to that.”
