SA records 13 575 new COVID-19 cases, 149 deaths

South Africa has recorded 13 575 new coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, representing a positivity rate of 23.2% and bringing the country’s total cases to 1 810 164. Gauteng accounts for most of the cases provincially, having recorded a total of 545 262 of cases.

According to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD), Gauteng accounts for the majority of the new cases (64% of new cases) followed by the Western Cape (11% of new cases).

More South Africans have also succumbed to the disease with 149 more fatalities recorded, bringing the country’s total death toll to 58 590.

The Gauteng province also accounts for most of the COVID-19-related deaths, having recorded 12 079 fatalities so far.

Tests and recoveries 

The country has conducted 12 493 891 tests to date, with 58 635 tests conducted in the last 24-hour cycle. The private sector accounts for 56% (7 048 994) of total tests while the public sector accounts for 44% (5 444 897).

Recoveries stand at 1 640 849, translating to a recovery rate of 90.6%.
