The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Nomsa Chabeli, has again called on Parliament’s Portfolio on Communications and Digital Technologies to create an enabling environment for the broadcaster to become sustainable on a long-term basis.

Chabeli, SABC Board Chairperson Khathutshelo Ramukumba as well as the Minister and Deputy Minister, are addressing the committee on the broadcaster’s five-year turnaround plan and discussions around the SABC Bill that is before the committee.

It is envisaged that the Bill will be the vehicle to change the way the broadcaster can generate income.

Last week, Parliament facilitated the induction programme where all industry players presented their mandates and challenges to the committee.

Currently before the committee is the SABC Bill, wherein suggestions are made about the funding model of the SABC, to assist with its sustainability.

Chabeli asked MPs to look at global trends in terms of funding of public broadcasters.
