SABC Group Executive for News and Current Affairs, Moshoeshoe Monare, says the public broadcaster will defend the legal action brought against it by the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK).

The MK Party has filed papers in the High Court in Johannesburg, challenging the SABC’s use of the term “Government of National Unity.” The party seeks a hearing in August to declare the term’s use unconstitutional.

MK party leader Jacob Zuma argues in his affidavit that millions of South Africans rely on the SABC as their primary news source. He claims that the current arrangement in South Africa does not fit the definitional elements of a GNU and that using the term “deliberately misleads the public.”

The SABC recently responded to the party’s cease and desist letter, describing the allegations as “untenable.”

The broadcaster emphasised the proper channels for lodging a complaint and stated that the letter of demand was meritless and an irregular step.
