The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has encouraged young women to fight poverty and make a meaningful contribution to food security amid climate change challenges worldwide.
This comes as the country marks Women’s Day.
The commission hosted a discussion with female learners from different schools in the Eastern Cape on the impact of climate change on young women and the opportunities that come with it.
Zukiswa Mqhakanya from the Human Rights Commission urged women to be at the forefront of initiatives aimed at reducing the effects of climate change.
“Women need to be at the forefront … and take up space. If we are talking about policies, (they must) be there to be part of the conversations and debates,” she said.
