SA’s opposition parties praise late Nambian President Geingob

Opposition political parties in South Africa have sent their condolences following the death of Namibian President Hage Geingob. Geingob passed away at the age of 82 after a brave fight against cancer.

Political parties are united in praising the contribution made by President Geingob in his home country and the region. South Africa’s official opposition says he was instrumental in fostering closer diplomatic and trade relations in Southern Africa.

“President Geingob’s contribution to Namibia, South Africa and the Southern African Development Community has been instrumental in fostering closer diplomatic ties and trade helping to secure the prosperity of the Southern African region as a whole. The DA extends its condolences to the Geingob family and his loved ones, his party the South West African people’s organization and the people of Namibia,” says DA leader John Steenhuisen.

Other parties hailed Geingob for his role in the restitution process following colonial oppression.

“The sudden passing of President Hage Geingob, President of Namibia is as shocking as it is saddening. President Geingob has a very good struggle history and an equally good clean administration of the Namibian state. He particularly led the people of Namibia in the campaign to get restitution and reparations for the genocide of the Namibians in 1905, he highlighted the contempt with which the Western World treated the African people,” says PAC leader Mzwanele Nyhontso.

“The Honourable Geingob is known to be an architect of the Namibian constitution, a man who was considered to be a pillar and who served his nation with distinction. The ACDP calls on the leaders who are to follow in his footsteps to take a leaf from his book and to work towards reconciliation, towards peace and to be seen to be reconcilers of the nation,” says Deputy President of the ACDP, Wayne Thring,

“We’ve lost another leader that assisted in the foundational principles of the liberation movement. we’re also aware of the fact of the atrocities committed against Namibia by the German people and we feel that one of the ways to honour the late president is for Germany to start computing the reparations that they have to pay for the people of Namibia,” says President of Al Jama-ah, Ganief Hendricks.

Geingob has served as President of Namibia since 2015 and was due to finish his second term in November this year.
