Seven people are reported to have been killed in what authorities believe to have been an execution-style attack in the township of KwaMashu in Durban.

The incident, which took place under the railway bridge at the junction of Malandela Road and the M25 off-ramp, has left residents reeling.

The police are at the scene. Police spokesperson Jay Naicker says all the deceased were found with gunshot wounds to the head. He says the deceased are said to have been living under the bridge and were allegedly involved in crime in the area.

“Seven men were attacked and shot underneath a railway bridge at the corner of Malandela Road and the M25 off-ramp. All seven deceased were found lying next to a railway bridge and in a straight line with gunshot wounds in their heads. At this stage, the motive is suspected to be vigilantism. And we are confident that there will be a breakthrough in this matter.”

The circumstances surrounding the attack have led authorities to suspect vigilantism as a possible motive, raising concerns about the impact of extrajudicial action in the community.

The brutality of the attack has prompted widespread calls for a swift and thorough investigation into the matter. Residents have expressed profound shock and anguish over the tragic loss of life.

The authorities have pledged to intensify efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
