Animal welfare organisations in Cape Town say they are experiencing an influx of displaced animals from affected areas due to the weather.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA is pleading with Cape communities to open their homes and adopt animals.

The week-long adverse weather conditions have not spared the animals. Organisations have come forward to assist in the rescue mission of displaced animals in the affected areas. Among the rescued pets was a dog now named River.

Inspector at the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, Rudolph Philander says they have been busy.

“It’s been some of our worst weather and we have seen some of the animals displaced. Farm animals, wild animals especially dogs and cats. We’ve rescued animals stuck in rivers, stuck in canals and in vlei areas. Our inspectors are working around the clock to make sure that these animals are safe.”

Philander says among the rescued animals are stray and surrendered pets. He has called on communities to come forward and assist the organisation by adopting the animals.

“There have been people calling us asking if they can donate or adopt animals because they want to save as many animals as possible and as more space opens there’s more space for more vulnerable animals to come in.”

The Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha also faces an increase in the number of affected animals brought in. The clinic is sitting at a capacity of 150 percent. Sonwabile Menziwa from the clinic says that even though they have been receiving stray animals, with the capacity of the clinic and the current climate, he is pleading with the community to open up their homes for the animals.

“As you can see in our socials we are pleading with communities for adoptions and fosters as we don’t want our dogs impacted cause it’s very cold. We have blankets and stuff, but they are still outside, if it’s possible we want them in happy homes.”

With the increasing warning levels for more rain, more animals and pets are likely to be rescued.
