Stellenbosch University says a properly facilitated process involving the university’s management and all interested stakeholders will be critical for shaping a renewed and re-imagined Wilgenhof Residence.

This after the university decided to close Wilgenhof for a year to revamp it.

The residence made headlines a few months ago after disturbing images and paraphernalia were found in locked rooms.

Chair of the Stellenbosch University Council, Dr Nicky Newton-King says the new residence will be more aligned with the values of the university.

“This needs to be the starting point of meaningful and systemic change in the university’s desire to foster an environment where all students can thrive in a community that upholds the values of inclusivity, respect and excellence and that is aligned to the university’s vision 2040. The university values its code, the spirit of its restitution statement and the South African constitution. The university’s council looks forward to supporting that momentum.”
