The Council of Stellenbosch University will today decide the future of Wilgenhof men’s residence.

A report, which was commissioned by the University and was accepted by the Rectorate, recommended that Wilgenhof be shut down.

The report alleges racist practices and abusive initiation practices for first-year students were conducted at the residence.

The Wilgenhof Alumni Association has rejected the closure saying it will have severe ramifications.

Spokesperson Jaco Rabie says they hope the Council will take the well-being of its current students into account when deciding on the future of the residence.

In a submission to the Council in July, the Association said the proposed closure of the residence was irrational.
