The Annual Judiciary Report has revealed that superior courts achieved 85% of their performance targets for the 2022/23 financial year. The judiciary had set 13 targets and achieved 11.

Two performance targets were not achieved which, among others, relate to the performance of finalised Constitutional Court matters.

The target that was set for the period under review was 70%, however, only 55% was achieved.

Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, delivering the report before dignitaries in the Constitutional Court in Johannesburg, elaborated on the backlog in criminal matters and said the judiciary hoped to perform better in the next financial year.

Zondo says, “The percentage to which criminal case backlogs was reduced. The target that the judiciary had set for all superior courts was that backlogs should be reduced to at least 30%. We were only able to reduce backlog up to the average of 47%.”
