An alleged suspect has been killed in a shootout with police at Esikhaleni on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

Provincial police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says officers were responding to an ATM bombing incident when they were caught in a crossfire with the suspect.

He says the police are searching for a second suspect who ran into a sugarcane plantation.

“Police responded to reports of an ATM bombing at a store in Esikhaleni and swift investigations led to the arrest of the driver of the suspects’ getaway vehicle. Another vehicle, which the suspects were using, was spotted at Madlankala area and with the suspects failing to obey lawful instructions from the police and shooting at the men of law. A shootout ensued which resulted in one suspect sustaining fatal gunshot wounds. A firearm was found in his possession,” says Netshiunda.

In May, four suspects were reported to have been killed in a shootout with police in Camperdown in the Umgungundlovu District Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal.
