KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police say two homemade explosive devices have been found at a mosque’s premises in Greenwood Park in the north of Durban.

KZN police spokesperson Jay Naicker says the suspects were in Kenneth Kaunda Road when a security vehicle drove past them.

He says they fled and threw the explosive devices into the mosque’s premises. Naicker says it would appear that the suspects were on their way somewhere when they were spotted by a security guard.

“Police bomb technicians confirmed it was homemade explosive devices that consisted of commercial explosives. The devices were not set up to explode. It is suspected that the men were en-route to an unknown location with the devices when they were disturbed by the security officer. Investigations to locate the suspects are ongoing. We commend the security officer who found the devices as he did not touch them and immediately alerted authorities.”

In a statement, the Durban North mosque says a security guard noticed a vehicle entering the mosque’s driveway in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

It further states that an unidentified male, one of the passengers, exited the vehicle and placed an object into the shrubs near the mosque’s entrance.

Upon noticing the guard approaching, the individuals fled the scene. The Durban North mosque says it has heightened security measures, urging anyone with information to contact law enforcement or the mosque directly.
