Tanzania and Malawi have agreed to be more transparent concerning data on their respective maize markets. This is a prerequisite to lifting the maize ban issued in December.

Food concerns have hampered the trade, as plant health and pesticide control officials from both nations decide to take action.

The ban was effected at a time when the World Food Programme and government announced that 4.4 million Malawians faced severe food shortages until March 2024.

Both countries have since agreed to share information to enable them to make the best decision before effecting a maize importation or maize exportation ban.
