Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) says its termination of CEO Zolani Matthews’ employment is in line with his contract.

This is the third time his employment has been terminated and it has happened just days after he was reinstated following a favourable Labour Court ruling.

Matthews’ contract was also terminated in 2021, after an investigation revealed that he had not disclosed his dual citizenship.

In a statement, Board Chair Nosiviwe Nokwe Macamo says the termination of Matthews’ contract is also in the interests of PRASA and all rail passengers.

PRASA also says that in accordance with the July Labour Court ruling, it reinstated Matthews and reimbursed him for backdated remuneration following his dismissal in 2021.

However, PRASA claims that the board was unsuccessful in its recent efforts to reach an amicable agreement with Matthews.

It still remains unclear as to what will happened to the newly appointed CEO Hishaam Emeran.
