South African sprint sensation Akani Simbine guided the men’s four-by-100-meter relay team to a silver medal in last night’s final at the Paris Olympic Games.

Simbine, who was denied a medal in the men’s 100m final earlier this week, came home in a time of 8.78 seconds in the last leg finally bagging a well-earned Olympic medal.

“The medal is just the cherry on top. I have proven myself to the game, I have proven myself to my competitors and that for me is enough. I am inspiring a new generation in Africa and that’s really huge. I don’t take it very lightly and its really great and now I have a medal but that doesn’t describe me I am a sprinter, I am an athlete but I think this medal is for everyone who wished a medal upon me from different countries, South Africa, Africa, America the whole world. You know this medal belongs to everyone,” says Simbine.

The relay team set a new African record when they bagged the silver.

Bayanda Walaza, Shaun Maswangani, Bradley Nkoana and Akani Simbine, finished second behind Canada, clocking a time of 37.57 seconds.

Maswangani was naturally delighted with the team’s performance.

“You know we will settle for the silver right now. We know that there is more to come, there’s going to be another Olympics. There are still more young guys coming through the ranks for guys like AK you know it’s a special moment for him, it’s a special moment for these two guys it is a special moment. He is still in high school, he has got math next week. He is still in university, we are the quote-unquote vets so just to come out here and put on a show for Africa. Just to bleed the green and gold every day is so special to us.”
