Three sites in South Africa have been nominated to be declared World Heritage Sites. They are the Diepkloof Rock Shelter close to Elands Bay on the West Coast, Pinnacle Point in Mossel Bay in the Garden Route, and the Sibhudu Cave in KwaDukuza, KwaZulu-Natal.

The 46th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee is meeting in New Delhi, India.

The sites are nominated in the category of the Emergence of Modern Human Behaviour.

Western Cape Minister for Cultural Affairs and Sport Ricardo Mackenzie says, “When I visited the Western Cape sites recently it was incredible to imagine our ancestors who left their mark in these rock shelters. We need to preserve this cultural heritage for future generations. World heritage site status for these sites will boost tourism, economic development and job creation.”
