Trial for late Justice Mokgoro’s partner set for March

The Barkly West Regional Court in the Northern Cape has set aside three days in March next year for the trial of the partner of the late Justice Yvonne Mokgoro.

David Mmelesi faces a charge of culpable homicide following a car crash last year which led to the death of Mokgoro.

Mmelesi, who was Mokgoro’s partner at the time, was the driver of her vehicle when the crash occurred.

Mokgoro’s son says they are relieved that there is now a trial date but says they are yet to find closure.

Ithateng Mokgoro elaborates, “It’s not easy to close when you can’t even get into your mother’s house, because there is a hostile figure occupying it, refusing the family to enter the house. It’s not easy to close when culturally you can’t do customary things that need to be done to close the passing of the mother when there is so much hostility.”
