Two hundred and fourteen babies born on Christmas day were delivered at Gauteng healthcare facilities between midnight and 12pm today. Gauteng Health MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi visited the Sebokeng Hospital in the Vaal to welcome the new-born babies as well as present them with gifts.

She’s also thanked healthcare workers who are working during this period under the difficult conditions brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The MEC wished all parents well and encouraged mothers to opt for breastfeeding their babies as it is essential and has many health benefits for newborns. MEC Mokgethi also urged parents of the newly-born babies to register births early, through Home Affairs offices available at health facilities. This is part of efforts to create a seamless service for communities by government,” Gauteng Health Department spokesperson Kwara Kekana explains.
