The newly elected Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Cape Town Professor, Mosa Moshabela, is calling for a collaboration among the four universities in the Western Cape.
He says such a move would help to effectively tackle society’s socio-economic challenges.
Moshabela says current funding models for universities make it possible for them to compete and cooperate.
Delivering the Annual Vice-Chancellors’ Lecture at Stellenbosch University yesterday, Moshabela said: “It’s easier to get a sophisticated research equipment or instrument that can be shared across the institution instead of one institution getting it and also if the different institutions all chip in into that fund then we are more likely to reach the amount that we need quickly. This is about basically, how we survive as universities during the times of financial constraints.”
