Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) commissioner Teboho Maruping has been suspended.

The Ministry of Employment and Labour says the Commissioner was placed on precautionary suspension due to the nature of charges he is facing.

It is alleged that Maruping played a role in the conclusion of the agreement between Thuja Holdings, led by Mthunzi Mdwaba, and the UIF.

The controversial deal amounting to R5-billion was declared invalid and set aside by the Pretoria High Court in May this year.

The Supreme Court of Appeal further dismissed, with costs, the subsequent appeal that was lodged by Mdwaba in August.
