Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku has confirmed that the people involved in a bus accident on the Van Rhyns Pass outside Vanrhynsdorp on the West Coast are construction workers from Upington in the Northern Cape.
Sileku says 10 people have been confirmed dead while 12 others are being treated at a hospital in Vredendal.
He says they were on their way to Ceres to build a solar plant when their bus rolled down the mountain slope.
Sileku says, “What we know is that the driver lost control of the bus…but in terms of the broader and more details on what has led for the driver to lose control, we don’t have those specifics or probably when the investigation has been concluded then it will be able to give us more detail why the driver lost control of the bus.”
We are deeply saddened by the tragic bus crash that occurred on Monday, 2 September 2024, on the R27 near Vredendal in Van Rhynspass, Western Cape. Our thoughts are with the families of the six people who lost their lives and those injured in this devastating accident. pic.twitter.com/XA9n9zbz7z
