The Western Cape Mobility Department says plans are underway to restore urban rail services in the province, starting with the Khayelitsha line.

As of this month, commuters have been able to board trains at Philippi and Nolungile stations on the Cape Town to Mandalay line.

Provincial Minister Isaac Sileku says this initiative aims to reduce road traffic in Cape Town during peak hours.

The minister met with PRASA yesterday to discuss the gradual reopening of strategic rail stations.

The Provincial Minister’s spokesperson, Hugo Geldenhuys says, “The Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku had his first official meeting with the group chief executive officer of PRASA. Minister Sileku said PRASA should form the backbone of public transport. Minister Sileku said meaningful partnerships are going to move the Western Cape forward and that it will impact positively on commuters and the entire economic value chain.”
