The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) says despite the ongoing weather conditions, all cemeteries remain operational. MJC says they have faced various challenges due to persistent storms over recent days in Cape Town.

The MJC’s Burial Administration oversees Muslim cemeteries in Cape Town. MJC Secretary Faizal Sayed says the impact of the weather has made things difficult.

“With the water table rising due to the amount of water coming down. That water table is expected to rise, so within the next few days we might see a bit more flooding in certain cemeteries and we probably going to have to make a decision on burials around those cemeteries but for now, all cemeteries remain operational and are continuing to bury.”

“A number of things happened, these include some of the cemeteries being waterlogged posing a delay for burials. Gail force winds for example in the Mowbray cemetery in Cape Town, lots of trees come down in this time because of the clay. We have found a number of trees have already collapsed which means that they crash onto graves or granite,” adds Sayed.
