Environmental Advocacy group “Rethink the Stink” says sewage spills and pollution is causing major health concerns for residents who live near waterways across the Western Cape.

This comes as residents of Milnerton in the province raised the alarm over sewerage making its way into the Milnerton Lagoon Beach.

Director of the group, Caroline Marx says while the local government is ramping up efforts to deal with the situation, local communities also need to play their part in reducing waste.

“Well, in the past three years, there had been tremendous progress made, the city of Cape Town has more than doubled its budget, in some cases, they have tripled in some areas and there are really some really long term projects that are underway – but there are too many sewage spills and as an example, last week the Rietvlei recreational slay had E. coli levels exceeding 4 000, over the safe limit for contact,” says Marx.
