As the Western Cape experiences a resurgence in COVID-19 cases, a mobile vaccination service has been welcomed by the community of Pella near Atlantis along the Cape West Coast.

The Vaxi Taxi Mobile service has been launched in partnership with the Western Cape Health department and private companies.

Western Cape launches Vaxi Taxi mobile vaccination drive in Atlantis:

The service involves mobile vaccination vehicles and a truck equipped with cold-chain refrigeration, waste management process and information technology infrastructure used to administer the vaccines.

Western Cape Health Minster Dr Nomafrench Mbombo says “In the metro, in terms of the increase in cases it’s almost 200% so which is quite concerning.

That is why we are saying in order to save our summer, it should be jabs before anything, vax before the vibe and we have to reach out to the people. And I am making an example. If the IEC could bring the ballots anywhere especially for those who can’t reach the voting station, why can’t we.”

Last week, Western Cape Health authorities said at least 16 cases of the Omicron coronavirus variant have been confirmed in the province.

Dr Fundile Nyati on the Omicron variant:

This comes ahead of a fourth wave, that’s expected in the next two weeks.

The provincial Department of Health Head, Keith Cloete said they have seen a rapid increase in the number of daily coronavirus infections. He was addressing the media during an online briefing.
