Woman convicted of kidnapping Zephany Nurse to be placed on parole

The woman convicted of kidnapping a baby from Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town in 1997 will be placed on parole in August.

Lavona Solomon was convicted of kidnapping, fraud, and contravening the Children’s Act in 2016 for abducting Zephany Nurse, who was renamed Miche Solomon, when she was just three-days-old. Solomon was sentenced to 10 years behind bars.

In 1997 Solomon walked out of Groote Schuur Hospital with Nurse while her mother lay sleeping. 17 years later, Miche Solomon met a younger girl at school who had a striking resemblance to her.

After some intensive investigation, it was established that Miche was indeed the baby kidnapped in 1997.

A Department of Correctional Services spokesperson, Candice van Reenen, says Solomon will be paroled on the 18th of August. She says Solomon is currently completing pre-release programmes.

Once released, Solomon will be admitted into the system of Community Corrections and serve the remainder of the sentence until its expiration in 2026.
