As the country gears up to mark Women’s Day on Friday, one economist has called on women to step-up and avail themselves for leadership roles.

Economist and chairperson of the National Empowerment Fund, Dr. Nthabiseng Moleko, was hosted by Kimberley’s Sol Plaatje University to speak on gender equality and women’s empowerment 30 years into democracy.

Dr. Moleko says women should choose careers that allow them to participate fully in the economy.

“What we are seeing is that the pockets of poverty and incidents of a high poverty gap exists primarily in women-headed households because, in the main, a large amount of women are not employed. I think this worsens the extent of inequality and economic vulnerability and abuse. The second aspect of what we are seeing is that from an education perspective, women are very much in the social sciences, the humanities and sectors that I would say are not the key drivers and are not in the real economy.”
