The South African women’s sevens rugby team has suffered a first defeat at the HSBC Sevens Play-off tournament in Madrid.

After resounding victories over Argentina and Belgium on day one, the Boks women suffered a 24-nil defeat in their final Pool B match to finish second behind the Brazilians who were unbeaten.

However, the Boks still require just one more win in Sunday’s play-offs to retain their place in next season’s World Series.

The Play-off tournament is a promotion/relegation event featuring the bottom four teams of this season’s World Series and the top four teams of the Challenger Series.

Meanwhile, the Blitzboks ended the Pool stage of the Madrid Grand Finale winless.

Reduced to four players at one stage, ill-discipline eventually cost the South Africans as they were beaten 33-24 by New Zealand in their second match of the tournament.

The Blitzboks were also beaten 26-seven by Pool B winners Fiji to miss out on a place in the play-offs.
