Algeria has circulated a new draft Security Council resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.

The move comes after a lengthy Council meeting on Wednesday that sought to ventilate the recent ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) imposing provisional measures on Israel’s military conduct in its military offensive against Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza that has seen a massive number of civilians killed.

The negotiations on the new draft are in their infancy.

The draft demands not only an immediate ceasefire but reiterates that all parties scrupulously comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law, particularly in regard to the protection of civilians and civilian objects.

It also rejects the forced displacement of Palestinians and reiterates its call for full and unhindered humanitarian access throughout the entire Gaza Strip.

The text recalls the ICJ ruling in relation to the need for Palestinians to be protected within the scope of the Genocide Convention but makes no mention of Hamas or the hostages, which has been a red line for veto-wielding countries like the United States.
