The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) in the Eastern Cape has released a forensic report on the controversial Lesseyton Sportsfield outside Komani.

It found that the awarding of the R20 million tender in 2019 was irregular.

COGTA MEC Zolile Williams tables the report to the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality Council on Wednesday.

Part of the findings include that the contractor escalated prices during the project without following the tender process and that the tender was cancelled but work continued without it being advertised.

Department spokesperson Pheelo Oliphant says they will not tolerate any form of corruption from municipalities.

“The investigations found that the people in the corruption fraud and misrepresentation were able to change the scopes of work without following due processes to this end the recommendation of reports says all the people who were involved in the corruption must be prosecuted by the NPA without delay.”
