Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane is set to unveil the name of the independent law firm tasked with investigating the tragic death of a learner who drowned during a school excursion. The Grade seven learner, a pupil of Laerskool Queenswood in Pretoria, lost her life in the incident.

This move comes in the wake of several drowning incidents involving learners during school excursions in recent years. Among them are two matriculants from Sizathina Secondary School in Dududu, who tragically drowned while attending an annual career exhibition at the Durban University of Technology last year.

Gauteng Education Department spokesperson Steve Mabona says the appointed law firm will be tasked with conducting a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the learner’s drowning. The findings of the investigation will be crucial in guiding the department’s decision-making process.

Mabona emphasized the importance of thorough investigations to uncover the root causes of such tragedies and to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The recommendations provided by the independent law firm will inform the department’s response and help implement measures to ensure the safety and well-being of learners during school activities.
