KwaZulu-Natal Co-operative Governance MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi is today expected to visit communities that have been affected by the recent wildfires in the Nkandla and Umlalazi local municipalities.

Sixty-seven-year-old Muntukabongwa Gazu died when fire gutted his house in Ezinyosini.

Buthelezi says municipalities should be able to access funds in such incidents.

“It is clear that government needs to reconsider the budget that is given to municipalities because they are unable to aid such disasters. It has become a norm that many areas in the province experience natural disasters where municipalities are limited with resources due to budgets. I believe as the MEC for CoGTA I will be able to look into this. I urge communities to remain on alert and refrain from starting fires and leaving them unattended.”

More than 45 homesteads have also been destroyed, livestock killed and other infrastructure damage.
