The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) insists that its newly implemented eZaga payment system is working well despite ongoing protests by university students around the country.

Students affiliated to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) student command protested outside the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Steve Biko campus on Thursday over challenges with NSFAS.

NSFAS spokesperson Slumezi Skosana says, “The system is working, we started with the system last month, and we were able to pay allowances to over 400 000 students and in just one month upon them onboarding on the new system.

So, where there have been glitches- we have advised students to come forward. If there’s something in your account that is not right you’d step into your institution and find out, you wouldn’t go to the social media to the social media to express that.”

More than 20 students from the University of the Free State’s Bloemfontein and Qwaqwa campuses have been arrested following yesterday’s violent protests.

Earlier this week, another student protest turned violent in Pretoria. Students were demanding that Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimade accept their memorandum of grievances, instead of his Director General.
