The Marshalltown Justice Campaign is seeking redress for a person murdered before a fire engulfed the Usindiso building in Johannesburg in August last year. More than 70 people were killed.

A 29-year-old man is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday to face charges, including more than 70 counts of murder.

He was arrested on Tuesday this week after he allegedly confessed before the Commission of Inquiry into the cause of the fire that he killed a person and then set the body alight in a bid to destroy evidence.

The campaign’s Trevor Shaku is attending the court hearing.

“We are here because we want to pledge solidarity with the victims of the fire, and we have created this fire justice campaign to ensure that we seek justice for them, and justice is a question of not only the arrest of the people who committed the arson and, as part of a confession, murdered an individual, and as part of a cover-up, trying to burn the individual, which led to the razing of 77 souls that were in that building.”
