Teams from a private security company, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), are continuing to search for the body of a 23-year-old who was washed away while trying to cross a river with his friend at the weekend.

At least 11 people have died in heavy rains and flash floods in KwaZulu-Natal since Friday night.

On Saturday night, torrential rains caused havoc in Durban and surrounding areas especially along the north coast.

The company’s Prem Balarm says, “The pilot and crew will be travelling to Mhlasini area; that is the river that is leading to Canelands area where a body is believed to be washed away. The 23-year-old was crossing the river on Saturday night with his friends, and the person who was washed away doesn’t have any family in the area. RUSA and SAPS will try to locate him.”

Meanwhile, two people were also killed in Zwelisha outside Verulam yesterday when their home collapsed on them.

Ncamsile Zungu and her grandson, Selu, were sleeping when their shack wall fell on them.
