The Sol Plaatje Municipality in Kimberley in Northern Cape is warning residents to be vigilant following a WhatsApp scam targeting ratepayers.

In a WhatsApp message, Feroz Kahn is purporting to be working for the municipality, and seeking to visit homes of ratepayers whose accounts are in arrears to enforce disconnections or make payment arrangements.

The Municipality’s spokesperson, Thabo Mothibi, says there is no Feroz Kahn in the employ of the municipality and they are not carrying out any physical household based disconnections.

“No ratepayers who are in arrears are being contacted via WhatsApp and no official is allowed to take cash and all payments should be made at designated pay points, into the legitimate municipal bank account or online via Easypay. Please do not fall prey to such scams. Do call our call-centre to verify.”
