Two Road Traffic Inspectorate officers have been shot and killed in the line of duty at the N2 onramp to Nkodibe in KwaZulu-Natal.

The two officers, who were stationed at uMtubatuba RTI, were ambushed last night inside their vehicle by unknown suspects.

It is alleged that they were also dispossessed of their state service firearms. The matter was reported by a community member who also happens to be a police officer.

Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Department spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane says, “The MEC has expressed deepest shock and anger on this incident. We believe that our officers have been a target. We call on them to protect themselves when facing dangerous criminals. We are going to be very hard on these criminals.”

“We will make sure that they are brought to book urgently. Therefore we are calling on investigators to work around the clock to make sure that this matter is dealt with urgently. Our deepest condolence to the families. We ask anyone with information to share it with the police,” he adds.

Meanwhile, in July, five suspects were arrested in connection with the killing of two policemen who worked at the Mareetsane station in the North West.

The burnt bodies of the officers were found at the back of the state vehicle they used.
