Premier Alan Winde says the Integrated Western Cape Energy and Water Council, which has been established by cabinet will continue their drive toward energy security and water resilience.

This as the provincial government has resolved to expand the scope of the energy council to the Western Cape Energy and Water Council.

Winde says water security is critical as it enables investment opportunities.

“We have a 15-year water plan but we know that despite having full dams at the moment, it can very quickly change and water security just as energy security are critical if we are to enable our region into an investment space, into a place where people can find jobs and lower that unemployment rate. At the same time is dealing with the climate change pressures that we face.”

The energy council was set up last year to deal with rolling blackouts. The provincial government says the council will continue and intensify their drive toward energy security and water resilience. Some Cape Town residents had this to say.

“Obviously water is the most valuable resource on the planet right now. So, I fell like every drop counts. It’s not a nice thing to struggle with water. So, if there’s any means, any initiatives that can be implemented for people’s lives to be easier, so why not? And they should maybe start educating people about water conservation, I think it’s a fantastic idea. I think the Western Cape is one of those areas that has great quality of water. We were close to day zero which has government made provisions.”
