The Western Cape High Court has dismissed Dipuo Peters’ urgent application to have her suspension from Parliament lifted. The former Transport Minister has been suspended for one Parliamentary term for violating the Code of Ethics for Members of Parliament.

The social justice group Unit Behind laid the complaint against Peters saying during her tenure as Minister she failed to appoint a Group Chief Executive Officer at the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) despite a completed recruitment process.

They also cited a court judgment that found that Peters’ decision to dismiss the corruption busting board under Popo Molefe was irrational.

The group also laid a complaint against Peters for using Prasa buses to ferry African National Congress members to a party function.

In her urgent application, Peters wanted the Western Cape High Court to halt her suspension, pending a judicial review of the decision.

Her suspension takes effect from 30 January until the 28 March.
