The convicted former Northern Cape Public Works MEC and former African National Congress (ANC) provincial chairperson, John Block is expected to appear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court in the Northern Cape on Tuesday for a formal bail application.

He is appearing in court with two others with regard to the granting of a multi-million-rand tender for the development of the Kimberley Mental Hospital in 2003.

Block was convicted in 2018 and sentenced to 15 years in jail for fraud, corruption and money laundering.

Legal expert Thabo Molete says, “Mr John Block, as much as he is serving time since 2018, making him either eligible for parole in 2024 or 2025. Now if he is given parole, that will mean he has to go home.”

“But unfortunately for Mr Block, [he] has been charged again for fraud, money laundering and corruption. But these are new charges that emanates from a transaction in 2003.”
